Chai Tea Recipe

A popular coffee-bar alternative to a latte, chai tea combines black tea, spices, and milk. The savory notes from black pepper and various spices in this recipe give a wonderful aromatic experience to your home. Makes 4 servings.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (500 mL) of water

  • 6 whole black peppercorns

  • 2 slices of fresh ginger root

  • 1 small strip of orange peel

  • 14 tsp (1.25 mL) fennel seeds

  • 12 tsp (2.5 mL) cardamom seeds

  • 14 tsp (1.25) ground nutmeg

  • 7 whole cloves

  • 2 sticks of cinnamon

  • 3 bags of black tea

  • 3 cups (750 mL) 1% milk

  • 2 Tbsp (30 mL) + 1 tsp (5 mL) Truvia Original Calorie-Free Sweetener Spoonable***

Directions

  • 1.

    In a medium saucepan, combine peppercorns, ginger root, orange peel, fennel seed, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon sticks. Using a mallet or the back of a ladle, lightly crush or bruise spices to release flavors.

  • 2.

    Add water to the pan, bring to a boil and simmer with lid on for 20 minutes.

  • 3.

    Add the tea and steep for 10 minutes.

  • 4.

    Strain mixture, discarding spices and tea bags. (You should have approximately 1 cup/250 mL of spiced tea base).

  • 5.

    Combine Truvia Original Calorie-Free Sweetener and milk, warm to desired temperature.

  • 6.

    Add tea spice base to warm milk mixture.

  • 7.

    Left over tea can be refrigerated and enjoyed cold or reheated, stir before serving.
